The Kentucky Derby is not only a sporting event, it is also a fahion event. So much so that more money is often spent on Derby Day attire then at the betting booth.
And this year's torrential rains didn't stop Derby-goers from rocking the show-stopping fashions that we've come to expect at The Kentucky Derby. There was no shortage of seersucker suits, lavish hats, designer duds and pricey bling as perhaps the best-dressed crowd of 155,000 + invaded Churchill Downs.
At most sporting events fans would opt for hoods, wellies and other protective rain gear when faced with this weather dilemma. But the derby crowd definitely did not sacrifice fashion for function. Instead, sky-high stillettos and bold colors were a welcome contrast to a wet, muddy background. Though in an ironic twist, the hottest accessory at this year's derby was actually plastic. While it didn't dominate outfits, a touch here and there was necessary to keep high-class looks in tact, until they were safely under cover.
Before "the most famous two minutes in sports" took place, the focus was on the Red Carpet arrivals. Celebs, athletes and supermodels all wow'd the crowd with their Derby finery. Take a look at some of your favorite sports superstars as they "dressed to impress" in their Derby Day fashions:
Buffalo Bills wide receiver, Terrell Owens
Olympic gold-medal skier, Bode Miller
NBA draftees Patrick Patterson and John Wall
New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady and former MLB player, Barry Bonds
Hall of Fame baseball player, Cal Ripken Jr.
But no fashion is more iconic at the Derby than the hats. Bold, beautiful colorful and grandeur. Feathers, flowers, crystals and lace. From the elegant to the unique to the just plain crazy, take a look at some of A Glam Slam's favorites:
Oh yea, and there was a horse race that took place too. Congratulations to Calvin Borel and Super Saver on their Kentucky Derby win!
