Diamonds
are a girl's best friend. But when it comes to a championship ring in any
sport, they're a guy's best friend too. Althetes have been known to have a
great sense of style and being able to accessorize with championship bling puts them a cut above the rest.
Today's
NY Yankees' home opener was that much sweeter for the team, as they received
their 2009 World Series rings prior to the start of the game against the Los
Angeles Angels. The ceremony was marked by Hideki Matsui's much anticipated
return to the Bronx. It was a great moment as fans embraced "Godzilla" and players mobbed their former teammate and 2009 World Series MVP after he received his ring.
But
before A Glam Slam shows you the 2009 World Series gem, let's take a look at
how far we've come. The Yankees won their first World Series in franchise
history in 1923. They defeated the New York Giants in six games to clinch the
title.
The
equivalent of a World Series ring in 1923 was a gold pocket watch. The boys received a Gruen Pentagon watch to commemorate the win, which included an engraved
baseball scene and the words: "Yankees - World Champions 1923." Take
a look:
And now,
26 titles later, the jewelry has changed a little. Okay, a lot. The 2009 rings
from Balfour are dripping in jewels. They are hand-crafted from natural
white-gold. The top features a blue
stone accented by a diamond encrusted Yankee logo outlined in a baseball path. The
sides of the ring are adorned with each team member's name. The words “Tradition” and “Unity”
also appear on the sides of the ring, meant to capture the essence of the team's heritage and this championship win. Check it out:
