Countries all over the world are gearing up for one of the most
exciting and most cherished sporting events: the World Cup. And with every major sporting spectacle comes a great new batch of uniforms. In just a few short
months, fans will drape themselves in their team's colors and the jerseys of
their favorite players, to showcase the ultimate pride in their country.
Nike
will be outfitting 9 of the 32 teams participating in the FIFA World Cup this
Summer in South Africa. The brand unveiled the new National team kits in
London, just a few weeks ago. Not only do the new uniforms look great but as always with Nike, performance benefits and technological innovations
were a vital part of the design. But this time the sportswear giant
incorporated another large benefit. The kits are also environmentally friendly.
For
the very first time, all of Nike's National teams will be wearing jerseys made
entirely from recycled polyester. According to Nike, each was produced from up to eight recycled
plastic bottles, to create what the brand calls "the most
environmentally-friendly and technologically-advanced kit in football's
history." Fabric suppliers sourced "discarded
plastic bottles from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill sites and then melted them
down to produce new yarn that was converted to fabric for the jerseys."
The
teams wearing Nike's new jerseys in South Africa are: Brazil, The Netherlands,
Portugal, USA, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, and Slovenia.
The away national team kits will be available at retail starting
March 1st, while home national team kits will be available May 1st. You can find them at local Nike store locations and on www.nike.com and www.nikefootball.com

Soccer fans are some
of the craziest, most dedicated sports spectators out there. And Nike is taking
full advantage of this by launching a lineup of World Cup gear for fans as well, including jerseys, jackets and sneakers. All items will continue to remain
environmentally friendly.
For example, this month Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo launched the purple and orange Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II soccer boot, which comes with
exclusive access to the Nike Football Web site and iPhone application. It will
retail at $350 and will hit stores on April 1st. The boot will even be sold with an activation code "allowing consumers to access technology that
provides training tips from professional players." [WWD]
WWD also reports that Nike aims to launch six updated national N98 track jackets for
countries, including England, Brazil, the U.S., France, the Netherlands and
South Africa, by collaborating with an artist from each of the nations.
The road to June 11th is quickly approaching so Nike has begun its global marketing campaign. Outreach to consumers about the new recyclable World Cup fashions will focus on store events and other public relations efforts. Social media will also play a large role in promoting World Cup gear to consumers.
