FASHION POLICE: SPORTS FAN EDITION (REVISED)

A few months ago, A Glam Slam compiled a list of the "Top 10 Fashion Faux Pas," when it comes to attending a sporting event. Let's take a look at that list:

1. Wearing the jersey of a team from a different sport, or a team who is not playing in the game you are attending. Unless your wardrobe consists only of team jerseys (which would bring up a whole different set of problems), stick to the teams in the game.

2. Wearing your own name on the back of your jersey if you are older than the age of 10. You might have dreamed of becoming a professional athlete but let’s face it, it’s time to move on.

3. While it’s great to show pride in your team through your attire, there’s no need to go overboard. This is dedicated to the women who feel it’s necessary to wear a team logo t-shirt and jacket. And hat. And jeans. And earrings…

4. Pale pink fan gear. Jerseys, hats, hoodies, it doesn't matter. Avoid the pink.

5. Guys in suits; unless you are coming straight from the office, then you’re off the hook.

6. Face paint. Enough said.

7. Spelling out your team name or favorite player on your t-shirt with a bunch of pals. After a few beers, it never turns out the way you planned.

8. Wearing outdated fan gear. Newsflash: Brett Favre no longer plays for the Green Bay Packers. However, throwback jerseys are fully acceptable.

9. How about a lack of fashion? If it is the dead of winter and you have a beer belly yet still feel the need to go shirtless, that’s a problem. If you’re a JETS season ticket holder and you sit in section 317, that means you. Wink, wink.

10. Women who are dressed like they are heading to the club instead of a sporting event. If you are trying to draw attention to yourself, this is not the place to do so. You can trust Glam Gal that just this once, the guys are focused on thegame, not on you.

     
 

But several games later, it was clear that there are many more violations being committed by sports fans. So A Glam Slam took it one step further to the twitter world, where there's never a shortage of very vocal opinions. Glam Gal asked the many sports loving "tweeps" out there what they feel are the worst faux pas. While face paint and outdated jerseys were the overwhelming responses, here are 10 more great additions to the list:

1.   Men who tuck their jerseys into their jeans. And extra points off if you're wearing a belt. It's a jersey not a dress shirt. 

2.   Jerseys that are 10 sizes too big. Just because it might fit your favorite football player, doesn't mean it's the appropriate fit for you. 

3.   Mismatching a throwback item with a current item. 

4.   Jerseys worn over your sweatshirt, your coat and the many other layers you are wearing to keep warm. It makes the rest of us fear that your too tight jersey will bust open before the game's end. A team jacket or hat will be just fine in the cold weather.

5.   Anything on your head other than a baseball cap or a winter cap. That means no colored wigs or hats made of cheese, umbrellas or game balls. 

6.   Foam Fingers. Once again, enough said.

7.   Manny-packs. Yup, they still exist. Guys, you don't need more than a wallet, cell phone and keys so use your pockets. 

8.   Grown women dressed as cheerleaders.

9.  "Sports Bras." Obviously the women of warmer weather cities are more likely the culprits here, but bras made of baseballs, feathers, or anything edible. Not a good idea.

10. And what's the worst accessory for sports fans? Signs. Not only are they distracting but many lack creativity. In particular, the age-old “will you marry me [insert player name]" with a cut-out for your head. OR the acronym signs. You know the ones. A B C = Another Big Championship.

WHO'S HAUTE? THURSDAYS: CAROLINE WOZNIACKI

Caroline Wozniacki is a gorgeous,19-year old Danish tennis sensation. Many say she was born an athlete, with parents who played both volleyball and football. She was named and awarded the 2008 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Newcomer of the Year and is currently the youngest singles player ranked in the top 10 in the world. Her killer backhand helped her finish the 2009 U.S. Open in the Runner-Up position. And though she just was ousted in the 4th Round of the Aussie Open, this rising star is definitely one to keep an eye on. 

The tennis court has always doubled as a sports runway for new trends in fashion. And Wozniacki has become one of tennis' newest supermodels. She is a huge fashion fan and was a natural fit as the exclusive new face of Stella McCartney for Adidas. When it comes to her on-court style she says combining performance and style is key. Her dusty, mauve ruffled McCartney dress was easily the best 2009 U.S. Open fashion. And as for her off-court looks, she loves shopping in NYC's Soho area for brands like Louis Vuitton, Ed Hardy, Armani Exhange, Diesel and Miss Sixty.

In addition to her passion for fashion, Wozniacki strongly believes that health and physical fitness are important in the lifestyle of all young girls. Along with tennis, she also likes swimming and boxing to stay fit. And the blonde beauty even has her own line of organic hair and body products in Denmark. The line focuses on health and well being and is called Caroline Wozniacki - Love All. All in all, this girl is the total package.

BEHIND EVERY GREAT ATHLETE...THERE'S A WAG

By now most sports fans are familiar with the term “WAG,” but for those who are a bit behind, “WAG” is an acronym used by the British tabloid press to describe the wives and girlfriends of English football players. 

But the term has gone way beyond football. WAGs are present in every sport and it seems nowadays that a girl can’t just date (or marry) an athlete without being labeled his good or bad luck charm. The influence that a WAG can have on her guy, his team and the game has grown tremendously.

Below you will find A Glam Slam’s unscientific approach to what Glam Gal has deemed “The WAG Effect.” Let’s break it down, first from the very beginning:

HISTORY OF WAGS

The athlete/starlet combination is hardly new. Though the term “WAG” was not coined until a few years ago, it has existed in theory since the dawn of sport. Perhaps the most publicized incarnation took place when New York Yankees center fielder, Joe DiMaggio, romanced the ultimate blonde bombshell, Marilyn Monroe.

 

WAGS THROUGH THE YEARS

While Marilyn may have set the modern day precedent, other women since have maintained WAG status. A Glam Slam takes a look at some of the most memorable WAGS and their athlete significant others through the years.

Janet Jones and Wayne Gretsky

 

The actress and NHL Hall-of-Famer met in 1984, married in 1988 and immediately became one of LA’s power couples. Unlike some of the ladies listed below, Janet Jones Gretsky’s WAG status remains in-tact because of her 22 year marriage and five children.

 

Robin Givens and Mike Tyson

 

The actress and former Heavyweight Champion were married from 1988 to 1989. Rumors of adultery and domestic abuse doomed the relationship. Givens’ WAG status was short-lived as the two divorced after just one year of marriage.

Brooke Shields and Andre Agassi

 

The model/actress and tennis superstar dated for 4 years before marrying in 1997. Perhaps the pair should have stuck with dating, as Agassi was unsuccessful on the court once they were married. Shields’ WAG status went from baseline winners to unforced errors.

Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman

 

The Baywatch babe and rainbow hair colored NBA star dated for months before they eloped to Las Vegas. Their wacky and tumultuous relationship could not withstand an annulment and a divorce shortly after their marriage. Electra quickly lost her WAG status, but has remained relevant with many high-profile relationships since.

Mariah Carey and Derek Jeter

 

The diva and Yankee shortstop had a brief relationship from the mid to late 90’s. Many cited her appearance at games and the extensive media coverage it created, as a distraction to the team in general and Jeter more specifically. Mariah’s WAG status was called foul and she has yet to recover (see Nick Cannon).

Certain ladies have 9 lives when it comes to being a WAG. Alyssa Milano likes her men to play baseball, her favorite sport, as she’s dated Carl Pavano, Barry Zito and Brad Penny. As for Paris Hilton, she prefers anyone who wears a jock strap for a living having been with Cristiano Ronaldo and Brian Urlacher.

 

PRESENT DAY WAGS AND ‘THE WAG EFFECT’

“The WAG Effect.” It can be good or bad. It can lead to a championship or it can jinx a whole season. And these days, fans will remember a bad-luck WAG as much as a dropped fly ball during the World Series.

A Glam Slam has taken a closer look at some prominent present day WAGS and graded them on their influence.

KATE HUDSON – A +

 

Kate Hudson currently holds the title of “WAG MVP.” Being a WAG in general is very difficult, but being a WAG in New York City is another story. In 2008, the New York Yankees missed the playoffs for the first time since 1995. At the start of the 2009 season, fans in the Bronx were looking for a trip back to the World Series with a revamped roster. But with an injured A-Rod mired in a steroids controversy, victory was not a guarantee. Enter Kate Hudson…

Once the two started dating A-Rod was magically healed, his steroid issue hit the back pages, he finished with an MVP-like shortened season, and finally won a World Series title. New Yorkers were so happy with Kate’s effect on A-Rod that some argue she was the MVP of the playoffs. Though the couple split soon after the season finished, Kate’s term as a WAG ended with a World Series win for baseball’s most storied franchise. Top that ladies.

EVA LONGORIA: A -

Being seven years older than her husband, San Antonio Spurs point guard, Tony Parker, Eva Longoria has cemented herself as the ultimate “Cougar WAG.”  Having cheered on her man through two NBA Championships in 2005 and 2007 as well as a Finals MVP, you will not find a more vocal supporter in any NBA arena. Longoria also makes the grade because she has parlayed her WAG status into lucrative endorsements deals with Parker off the court.

BROOKLYN DECKER: C +

 

This Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model replaced Mandy Moore as American tennis heartthrob, Andy Roddick’s, leading lady. In July 2009, she suffered with the rest of the country as Roddick lost a five-set classic to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon Final. He has yet to repeat his Grand Slam success from 2003, (pre-Brooklyn) but has played well under her watch, so the jury is still out on this blonde beauty.

GISELE BUNDCHEN: D

 

In 2007 Tom Brady traded a leggy actress, Bridget Moynahan, for a leggy supermodel, Gisele Bundchen. A shocking Super Bowl loss to the NY Giants ending the chance at an undefeated season in 2008, a gruesome season-ending knee injury in 2009 and an early playoff exit in 2010 have made Gisele’s WAG status as shaky as Tom’s legs. Bunchen’s absence from Brady’s early Super Bowl successes may have New Englanders pleading for a reconciliation with Moynahan.

JESSICA SIMPSON: F

 

Pop star and Texas native, Jessica Simpson, wrangled her very own Cowboy in Dallas Quarterback, Tony Romo, beginning in 2007. Fans were concerned with Simpson’s constant need for Romo’s time and affection especially when the pair took a romantic vacation to Mexico during the team’s bye week before a playoff game. The fun in the sun did little to relax Romo, instead prolonging the Cowboy’s winless playoff drought.  Simpson even irked female supporters with her blatant disregard for appropriate fan gear, wearing a pale pink Tony Romo jersey to every game. This season, Tony and the Cowboys, sans Jessica, won the team’s first playoff game since 1996. Coincidence?

KIM KARDASHIAN: Incomplete

 

Fans of Kim Kardashian’s reality show are well aware of her on-again/off-again relationship with New Orleans Saints' running back, Reggie Bush. Kim K’s beau and his teammates will represent the NFC in the franchise’s first Super Bowl. The Saints success is not lost on its Head Coach Sean Peyton, who has been seen hugging Kim following victories. We’ll see if he hugs her again on February 7th in Miami.

A Glam Slam has chronicled the history of WAGS from years past until today. The future of WAGS remains bright and relevant with the emergence Rihanna’s rumored relationship with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder, Matt Kemp. With Spring Training right around the corner, only time will tell if she can pass the test and help bring a title West.

COUPLES ALERT: DWAYNE WADE AND GABRIELLE UNION TURN UP THE HEAT ON THEIR ROMANCE

He's the superstar forward on the Miami Heat and she's a gorgeous Hollywood actress. We've all heard the Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union dating rumors, but things are more serious than we think.

A Glam Slam's friends over at HollywoodLife.com, the ultimate resource for celebrity news and gossip, gave us the exclusive details on this romance as the two were spotted out and about together. And more than once.

A NEW LOOK FOR MLB BP CAPS

Pitchers and catchers report in 23 days. And opening day is only about ten weeks away. So as the players gear up for Spring training and the fans gear up for another baseball season, New Era debuts the newest caps to be worn throughout the exhibition games and during all pre-game workouts including batting practice.

This year’s re-styling offers a slight change from the previous caps, including piping on both the sides and brim of the hat, as well colored panels. The hats are designed with an embroidered (and raised) team logo on the front and a stitched MLB logo on a colored panel, on the back. Performance is enhanced through “CoolBase” vapor management, superior drying, and shrink resistance.

While A Glam Slam would like to tell you that they are a nice blend of fashion and function, the fashion part seems to be missing. Now some are definitely better than others, namely teams like the Indians, Giants, Mariners and Yankees, but probably because the piping and paneling are less evident. Sadly, the ugly awards would have to go to the Angels, Diamondbacks and Red Socks.

On a positive note, there is no baby pink involved (yet) and they are not as bad as the NFL’s sideline caps this year. You know the ones. The merging of colors on the rims always made them look dirty or covered in snow.

But the MLB offers a new version of these caps every few years. And the question on many minds always seems to be: why would you want a BP cap over a gametime cap? Glam Gal prefers the simple, more traditional looks, without all the nuts and bolts. But many disagree and believe that the BP caps are not only more fun and more comfortable, but also "special" because they are so unique. And that’s why the idea works so well. JEAN PAUL GAULTIER'S FIGHT CLUB

The 2010 Spring Collections showcased by top designers during Fashion Week this past Fall had a common theme: Sports. Let’s recap: Hermes had a Wimbeldon-themed runway show, Lanvin incorporated Sumo wrestling, Y-3 played soccer on the runway and Alexander Wang’s entire collection was inspired by American sports. As the new Autumn/Winter 2010 Menswear collections were introduced in Paris, a new sport was brought into the mix: Boxing.

Jean Paul Gaultier, a French couture designer, sent male models down the runway adorned with bloody faces, black eyes, stitches and fashions inspired by the sport. Belted robes, hoodies and leather jackets were accompanied by sweat towels draped around the neck and of course, boxing gloves. Even the designer himself took his bow looking as those he’d just battled for a few rounds.

To help bring the theme to life even more, the décor included an actual boxing rink, with corseted-female models taking punches, while the men showcased the new designs.

Okay, so maybe JPG went a bit overboard with the bloody additions but overall, the show was actually really cool. And as usual, his new fashions were totally hot. Check out the video:

And over in Milan, the DSquared brand took a similar approach with the debut of their 2010 Menswear Collection. Dubbed the “Hockey Horror Show,” designers Dean and Dan Caten also sent their models down the runway with bruised faces, split lips and bloody knuckles.

The twin designers are Canadian and since hockey is such a popular Winter sport, they felt it was a perfect fit their Autumn/Winter collection and a great way to honor their roots. With an interesting take on the theme, fashions featured Hockey-like jerseys with a rock and roll flair. The show even included crossed hockey sticks at the foot of a faux ice rink runway.

 
 

With New York Fashion Week just around the corner, it should be interesting to see how the couture designers continue to blend high-fashion with sports. Now if only we could have our favorite athletes model these fashions...

PUMA UNVEILS NEW WPS UNIFORMS

For one night only, the hottest new female soccer stars took on the role of supermodels.

Following the 2010 Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) Draft in Philadelphia, PUMA and WPS unveiled the 2010 uniforms. America’s top female soccer players and the WPS' fresh new faces, modeled the newest fashions from PUMA’s 2010 uniform line. 

 

The unveiling included a fashion show complete with a green turf runaway. One by one, the seven first round picks for 2010 strutted their stuff down the runway. They showed off their Away uniforms, including the official kit debut of the newest franchies, the Atlanta Beat and Philadelphia Independence. While the new draftees modeled the Away jerseys, veteran players were on hand to showcase the Home jerseys that we can expect to see this year.

Fusing both sport and lifestyle, PUMA's newly-designed uniforms from the "Power Collection," highlighted both performance as well as style. The uniforms are fashionable, with bold colors and a funky flair. They also offer a bit of femininity, as the jerseys have a more tailored fit.

PUMA's "Power Collection" is said to take inspiration from our primal instinct of Fight. The unis were designed to give the players the courage to be awesome and bold, as they prepare to take on the 2010 season. PUMA’s new offerings provide both technological benefits and fashionable features.

REEBOK TEAMS UP WITH ARMANI

The trend of sportswear giants collaborating with top designers continues, as Reebok and Emporio Armani have entered into a multi-year deal to create a special collection of sportswear. The EA7/Reebok Collection fuses the sporty and stylish EA7 Armani activewear line, with Reebok's innovation and technologies. The result? The ultimate sportswear concept and the perfect combination of fashion and sports.

According to the press release, designer Gorgio Armani says, “Today sportswear and activewear have become really important parts of our wardrobes. I wanted to offer my customers the possibility of wearing sports clothes that were stylish and comfortable."

The line debuted last week during Milan Fashion Week and will be distributed to limited Emporio Armani boutiques, select Reebok stores and preferred retailers worldwide, beginning in July 2010.

Take a look below at what you can expect to see from the EA7/Reebok Collection. These creations are be perfect for the fashion-conscious, yet active consumer. The kicks are totally chic to the eye, so much so that some of the designs even resemble dress shoes. BECKHAMS MAKE FASHION DESIGN A FAMILY AFFAIR

The Beckhams are easily one of Hollywood’s best-dressed power couples. While Victoria has a successful line of couture fashions, David is said to be developing his own collection as well.

This time around, the two fashion icons have collaborated not only with one another, but with their three sons. The whole clan has created a series of tees with the hopes of encouraging the nation to rise to the challenge for Sport Relief 2010. Sport Relief is a charity event from Comic Relief, in association with BBC Sport. The goal is to bring together the worlds of sport and entertainment in order to raise money to help vulnerable people both in the UK and the world's poorest countries.

According to Beckham, “Victoria and I are excited to be involved with Sport Relief again this year. Our family had a great time designing the T-shirt range and we hope it will raise much needed funds for many important causes. "

The tees feature a self portrait of Becks showcasing his football skills. His boys, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz joined in the creative process, using red and black colored spray cans to create the unique one-off Beckham family collaboration.

SPORTS GEAR FOR STYLE MAVENS

It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you look playing the game. Right? But even for the sportiest stylistas, this can come with a hefty price tag. A Glam Slam previously showed you Chanel's collection of ultra chic, yet sporty ski gear. And now let’s take it one step further; the $195 Chanel football. Italian brand Tod’s, most famous for their stylish loafers and handbags, has come out with a new collection of motorcycle/vespa helmets. Priced at $1,000, these helmets are hand-made in Italy. They feature soft leather, a microfiber lining and are designed to meet all road safety standards for both motorcycle and Vespa riders. Take a look:
