HORSING AROUND WITH HERMES

The legendary French brand, Hermès, has a heritage in chic equestrian style. In an effort to return to its roots, Hermes International has announced that it will align the brand with equestrian games and sports.

Hermès International will host a horse competition at the Grand Palais in Paris, "to celebrate the sporting, artistic and cultural aspects" of the equestrian world. The competition for international horsemen, named Saut Hermès, will take place April 3-4, 2010, and the event’s highlight will be an obstacle-jump competition. With the help of Hermes, the Grand Palais (or “Big Palace”) will stage an equestrian sport for the first time since 1957. [WWD]

A SOCCER SNEAK PEAK: U.S. WORLD CUP UNIS

The biggest question surrounding the U.S. soccer team’s appearance in the upcoming 2010 World Cup: what will they be wearing? Ok, so maybe that’s just Glam Gal’s concern. 

Photos of the U.S. World Cup home, away and third jerseys have been leaked. The jerseys are designed by Nike, and feature a large diagonal stripe across the front of the shirt. Apparently, this is a tribute to the 1950 U.S. World Cup team, who famously defeated England 1-0 in one of the greatest shocks in the soccer world. White shorts and white socks will also finish off the uniform. [Major League Soccer Talk]

From the looks of the potential uniforms, the U.S. team will be representing our country in style when they head to South Africa this summer. The designs are simple and sleek and the tribute aspect makes them even cooler.

WHO'S HAUTE? THURSDAYS: LINDSEY VONN

World champion ski racer, Lindsey Vonn, is one of the most successful female ski racers in American history. She was the first American woman to have won two consecutive overall World Cup championships, in 2008 and 2009. She also holds the U.S. record with nine World Cup Wins in a single season. While she’s won just about every other prize, she has yet to win an Olympic medal; but she will soon have her chance. Vonn cannot wait to compete at the 2010 games in Vancouver and her fans can’t wait either. Many believe she has the potential to become the “Michael Phelps of the Winter Olympics.”

Vonn has always had success on the slopes and with the Winter Games just around the corner, she’s also become a huge hit with marketers. She has signed on with major manufacturer and Olympic sponsor, Proctor & Gamble (P&G), and will appear in P&G beauty ad campaigns for brands including Cover Girl, Olay, Pantene, Secret, and Venus. 

The skier has admitted that fashion and style have always been of interest to her, as a different way to express herself. In fact, she recently took off her snow boots and slipped into stilettos for her very first fashion spread in Austria’s 1st magazine.

THE FUTURE OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL FASHION?

Throughout this month, 10 college football teams will take the field wearing Nike “Pro-Combat” Uniforms.  Nike debuted some of the new uniforms and equipment during games last weekend, and will roll out the remainder of the teams’ looks during rival games in the coming weeks.

Many have referred to these Combat Jerseys as the “the next generation” in jerseys because of their futuristic look. The uniforms were also created to be much lighter, so players can wear more padding without feeling weighed down. And in addition to the new gear, Nike has also created slogans for each of the teams, which will appear on specialty tees.

Here’s a complete list of the 10 participating teams and their slogans: 

1. Miami: “The U Knows”
2. TCU: “Don’t Back Down”
3. Virginia Tech: “Good Guys Wear White”
4. Oklahoma: “Stake Our Claim”
5. Ohio State: “Earned”
6. Florida: “Finish the Mission”

A NEW LOOK FOR THE TWINS

Though they fell a bit short in their quest for the baseball championship, the 2009 AL Central champs, the Minnesota Twins, have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming 2010 season.

The team will celebrate its 50th season with new uniforms, a new logo and even a new ballpark. The uniforms, which were unveiled earlier this week, will be worn during the Twin’s inaugural season at Target Field. According to the team’s press release, here’s the lowdown on their new and improved look:

• Primary Logo: The team will have a new logo incorporating the new "Twins" script and the words "Minnesota Twins Baseball Club"  
• The 50th Season Logo will be displayed on 2010 road jerseys and on the home throwback jersey
• Primary Home Uniform: The "Twins" script has been slightly altered and updated for 2010 and beyond
• Secondary Throwback Uniform: Twins players will wear a circa 1961 throwback uniform on Opening Day as well as every home Saturday during the 2010 season
• Primary Road Uniform: Twins players will wear new solid grey road uniforms featuring a "Minnesota" script inspired by the team's original "Minnesota" script

A NEW KIND OF 'WIN' FOR SEAN AVERY

Many know New York Rangers left wing, Sean Avery, for his skills on the ice. Others know him for his keen fashion sense. The hockey star spent a summer off-season as an intern for Vogue magazine and recently worked with men’s fashion label, Commonwealth Utilities, to present a line during NYC Fashion Week. And now he’s taken up a new hobby: designing houses. Well, kind of.

Avery is among the fashion designers, sports stars, and other VIPs, who have decorated paper mache houses for Women in Need (WIN), a charity that provides "housing, help and hope to homeless families." In keeping with the theme of "Home for the Holidays," Sean has collaborated with Parsons The School for Design to create a one-of-a-kind decorative house to be auctioned off at charitybuzz.com. You can bid on Avery's house thru November 30th and the proceeds raised will help Women In Need provide housing for homeless women and their families. 

Sean's creation has really managed to merge his two greatest interests. The house is decorated with Rangers jerseys to represent his time in the rink and the Vogue magazine logo, perhaps his future career? Yes, after his days on the ice, Avery has said he hopes to become a fashion editor.

WHO'S HAUTE? THURSDAYS: JOZY ALTIDORE

As an integral member of the U.S. National Soccer Team, Jozy Altidore helped the squad qualify for the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa. This 19-year old striker was the youngest U.S. player to score in the Major League Soccer (MLS) play-offs, in his first international game and in a World Cup Qualifier. He is also the youngest U.S. player to record a hat trick. Jozy was part of the team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and he has recently been loaned to the Hull City team of the English Premier League (from the Villarreal team of the Spanish Primera Division and the U.S. National Team) for the 2009/2010 season. 

Once a New York City resident, Jozy has admitted that he loves the city’s bright lights and his favorite thing to do in NYC is to go shopping. Lately, you probably haven't seen him roaming the city streets, but it's likely that you have seen him in the Adidas “Impossible is Nothing” ad campaign. He is one of the stars featured in the ads, alongside fellow soccer stud David Beckham. The campaign focuses on the challenges and struggles faced by a variety of athletes and Jozy's participation is a huge step in helping to bring some recognition to U.S. Soccer.

Some say Jozy has the potential to become the next big thing, the “LeBron James of soccer,” who will shine not only on the field but who could also become a media icon. And the sport of American soccer could use an exciting young superstar like Jozy, who can attract new fans and capture the attention of up-and-coming players.
